Universal Boxing Manager is a fun statistics based game for the sports manager in us all. You can think of it as a fantasy sports game taken to the next level. The game revolves around you organizing the boxing careers of anyone that you can manage to sign onto your team. You then set up a training regiment and manage your finances to get the most out of each boxer while avoiding bankruptcy. Training is done through a simple plus or minus system that directs training focus, while finances are handled through an equally intuitive system. The main expenses revolve around training equipment and medical care. Bad equipment increases their risk of injury and slows the development of their skills while poor medical care means that they’ll be out of action for greater periods of time after each fight. But, it will take awhile for the purses to get to a decent amount, so it becomes a delicate juggling act. To help out, once your boxer starts to rank well they will begin to receive sponsorship deals that will let you get some extra money in the bank to have some nice upgrades.
Once you take care of the setup each month, you just have to plan the fight. There are 17 weight classes and plenty of boxers available for them to fight against. After the match is booked you can skip ahead to the next month and either manage the fight directly or have it automatically resolved. A management option lets you adapt your strategy throughout the match and get the upper hand. You can tell them where to focus their hits, what strategy to use, and whether you will give them pep talks or heal their injuries in between rounds. The fighting itself can be seen through a text log that chronicles the big events of the fight or a basic top-down view of the ring that will show the boxer’s strategies and styles through their movements, announcer commentary, and damage reports. The graphics aren’t great, but it adds a little something extra to the game.
Overall, it is a decent game that a sports fan would probably like. There is a demo available for anyone who wants to get a feel for what the game’s really like before they commit to buy. It may not be Half-Life or Madden, but it should be a fun little game that is worthy of your time.
