* Be Specific – this may sometimes be hard for some people, but it is best if you practice being specific in your searches. For Example you are looking for a site that contains Broadway Musical Songs; try searching for the whole phrase or if you know specific artists try entering that in your search also. Doing this will make sure that you are getting what you want from your searches.
* Search by Category – most web directories offer searches in categories. An example is dmoz or the Open Directory Project. This web directory has specific categories that range from Arts, Kids and Teens and even a World Search that allows you to search in for something in a specific language. Searching by category helps narrow your search spectrum at the very beginning of your search. This way you do not have to worry about searches from a totally different category popping up.

* Favorites – web directories are constantly edited. Links that do not meet the sites qualifications may be removed without prior notice. If you found a site in a particular web directory before; there is a slight chance that you may not find it anymore. To avoid this, you could tag the websites you may need to visit again in the future. It is also possible to bookmark a web page so that you can go back to it easily later on. To bookmark a page, press Crtl + B on your keyboard. This action will open a bookmark window and you can then proceed to bookmark the page.

Tag: Web Articlesadmin @ 4:04 am

The council accepts and invites volunteer Virtual Library Maintainers. The process of acceptance as a Maintainer may take some time. It has even resulted in protest as to why it takes so long. Because of its Human-Edited nature, the World Wide Web Virtual Library is also being criticized for it accurateness and fairness. This is countered by the sites proponents with the idea that there are other maintainers that have noble intentions for the World Wide Virtual Library and that these maintainers will be able to correct, edit or remove malicious content.

The World Wide Web Virtual Libraries search engine was first created by Gabriel Fenteany during his stay in Harvard. The server was then moved to a different location where it fell victim to hacking, as a result the World Wide Web Virtual Library was without a server until early in year 2005.

The World Wide Web Virtual Library is also known as the WWWVL, VL or simply as the Virtual Library.

History – The World Wide Web Virtual Library was created and conceived by Tim Berners-Lee, but the man one who expanded, organized and managed it for several years was Arthur Secret. By late 1997 there were already a lot of individual virtual libraries found all over the World Wide Web. The maintainers of these virtual libraries opted to elect a council headed by Gerard Manning. The council oversaw the creation of its Constitution and Bylaws. The constitution was voted on by ballot on August 7, 2000. Worth mentioning also is the contribution of the late Bertrand Ibrahim who was a key contributor in the world wide web Virtual Library’s pre-association phase.

The World Wide Web Virtual Library’s Council states its general purpose as – service to the public being a non profit organization and the maintainers must understand that they will be given no monetary compensation for their efforts in maintaining the World Wide Web Virtual Library and that they can only work for public appreciation when they provide an excellent job. The council also states that the maintainers must have a certain degree of expertise on the category that they are working on.

The World Wide Web Virtual Library is the index of the content on the World Wide Web. It is a form of Human Edited Web Directory. It started life at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) by the man who created the HTML and the World Wide Web itself – Tim Berners-Lee. Being a Human Edited Web Directory the World Wide Web Virtual Library relies on a team of volunteer editors to maintain it.

A Web Directory is an Internet software that compiles a list of links to the websites on the World Wide Web. It was a result of the growing World Wide Web, and it provides a solution to searching for websites that fall into a same category. A Web Directory is not to be confused with search engines like Yahoo!, Google, AOL and others. Instead of looking for articles or websites that have the most keyword density they look for websites that correspond to what the user had searched for.

Web Directories, RSS feeds and the Internet Press 2 OF 3

It is important to remember that Web Directory is different from a search engine as it does not look for articles that have the most keyword density. It instead looks through the links listed and shortlist those that are most relevant to your search. Most existing Web Directories are Human Edited Directories. This means that each web directory has a team of volunteer editors that continually update and edit their content. Examples of Web Directories include: The Open Directory Project, Yahoo! Director and the World Wide Web Virtual Library.

Internet Press –This technology trend is probably more related to RSS feeds than Web Directories. The Internet Press is as it name suggests – a press or a news source that is focuses on getting their news out through the internet. It presents itself as your own newspaper page; the only difference is that it is found on the World Wide Web. Reliable Internet Press sources make life for business oriented people. They are still able to look through the latest news while they are working on answering their emails. Examples of the Internet Press include: The Free Internet Press and Yahoo! News.

Adopting the ‘Wiki’ Technology in the design of Web Directories 3 OF 3

Tag: Web Articlesadmin @ 4:22 pm

Criticism of the Wiki Technology fall on the fact that anybody can edit the wiki web pages and this would eventually result in nothing more than graffiti. Even if there are editors out there that have good intention, they would only be drowned by those that work to tamper the contents of the wiki page. This blow is argued by wiki proponents saying that the extensive community of users and editors are able to catch and edit any malicious content found and posted on the site.

Mistakes in the data entry will always occur. This is why Wikis work by making it easier to correct mistakes than to make them. The errors may be spotted by wiki users who can edit it themselves or report it to the wiki system. To a accommodate changes, wiki systems have a “Recent Changes” list that allow users to see what content has be recently edited.

All in all, Wikis are a great way of sharing information. They may not seem very reliable because of the fact that almost anyone can have a go at the content, but it is important to remember that there are individuals who are constantly working to make the wiki as reliable as possible. Plus, wikis would not have lasted this long if they were not good.
